Notre Dame College outdoes five education boards in GPA-5 tally

Single college secures 2,229 top grades, pass rate of 98.83 percent

Notre Dame College in Dhaka has produced more GPA-5 achievers than five of the country's 11 education boards individually in this year's Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations.

An analysis of results published today shows that 2,229 students from the college secured GPA-5, surpassing the total number of top-grade achievers under four general education boards and the Technical Education Board.

Mymensingh Education Board recorded 2,137 GPA-5 achievers, followed by Cumilla with 1,313, Sylhet with 1,204, and Barishal with 950. The Technical Education Board recorded just 886.

In fact, Cumilla and Barishal boards together produced 2,263 GPA-5 achievers, only 34 more than Notre Dame College alone, found an analysis by this newspaper.

The college's tally accounted for 6.2 percent of the 35,948 GPA-5 achievers under the nine general education boards. It also represented 13.3 percent of the 16,714 students who secured the highest grade under Dhaka Education Board.

According to the college's result sheet issued by Dhaka Education Board, 3,272 students were registered for the exams. Of them, 3,256 appeared and 3,218 passed, giving the institution a pass rate of 98.83 percent.

A total of 38 examinees failed, while 16 registered students did not sit for the exams.

Science students accounted for the overwhelming majority of GPA-5 achievers at the college. Of the 2,097 students who passed from the Science group, 1,807 secured GPA-5.

This figure alone was higher than the total number of GPA-5 achievers under Cumilla, Sylhet, Barishal, and Technical boards individually.

However, Notre Dame College's own performance declined compared with last year. In 2025, the college recorded 2,454 GPA-5 achievers, 225 more than this year. Its pass rate also fell from 99.60 percent to 98.83 percent.

The results came amid a sharp nationwide decline in HSC performance.

Across the nine general education boards, the pass rate dropped to a 22-year low of 51.62 percent from 57.12 percent last year. The number of GPA-5 achievers under those boards also fell from 63,219 to 35,948.
