JS committee calls for probe into corruption allegations in National University, education bodies

The parliamentary standing committee on the education ministry has recommended conducting on-site inspections to investigate allegations of irregularities and corruption in institutions under the ministry, including the National University (NU) and education boards.

The recommendation was made at the first meeting of the committee of the 13th Parliament today, according to a press release issued by the Parliament Secretariat.

The committee recommended verifying allegations of irregularities or corruption involving institutions under the ministry and taking necessary action. It also stressed the need for the committee to conduct field visits to such institutions.

It recommended giving priority to considering MPO enlistment of educational institutions that fulfilled the required conditions but were deprived of MPO status during the previous government’s tenure.

The committee called for necessary steps to modernise the country’s education system and bring it up to international standards to build a knowledge-based, corruption-free and ethical society.

It also expressed appreciation to the prime minister for taking steps to provide retirement and welfare benefits to 25,000 retired teachers.

The committee noted that the government had given the highest priority to education and allocated the largest share of the budget to the sector this year.

The meeting was chaired by committee Chairman Md Selim Bhuiyan.

Committee members Reza Kibria, Selimuzzaman Molla, Jahandar Ali Mia, Tahsina Rushdir, Bithika Binte Hossain, Mujibul Rahman and Atikur Rahman Mujahid attended the meeting.
